The SMTEI was founded to promote science in secondary schools and is offered by the College of Science at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. The Purpose of the SMTEI is to improve education in the natural sciences, mathematics, and technology by improving secondary school teachers' and students' understanding, enthusiasm, and knowledge. These programs include stipend support and professional long-term help in developing new teaching exercises. The SMTEI is operated and administered by key personnel who are professional scientists and practicing high school teachers.
