Teacher Research Experience 2003

The summer research experience. Teachers will be placed in labs June 3 through July 26, and will receive one-third of their stipend in on arrival and the remainder as shown in the Calendar. The stipend amount for the summer of 2002 will be $3,000. Additional funds ($1,400) for transfer of the research experience will be made available upon completion of the research experience.

The amount of time the teachers will spend on their research will be determined by the scientist/mentor and the teacher, but teachers should anticipate spending about 8 hours each day, 5 days each of the 8 weeks. The nature of the research project will depend upon the teacher and the mentor.

The Project Staff will meet with the teachers as a group each week to entertain questions, comments, suggestions, discuss research progress, and discuss ways the experiences can translate to classroom teaching. The group meeting is also important to encourage interaction and collaboration among the participating teachers. Teachers' attendance at these meetings is required for successful completion of the summer experience.

In addition, the Project Staff will visit all teachers in their respective labs at least once each week. The purpose of this visit is twofold: 1) to monitor the teacher and scientist/mentor interactions and to initiate adjustments that may be necessary to assure a mutually successful research experience for teacher and mentor; and 2) to assist in formulating plans for the practical implementation of new teaching exercises.
